KEY URLA
2024
Key Urla is a boutique hotel rooted in the elemental qualities of its context. Drawing upon natural stone, earth tones, and vernacular forms, the project seeks to offer guests a spatial experience that feels at once familiar and timeless.
Our design contribution focused on the interiors of the lobby and the restaurant, conceived as the central spaces of encounter and hospitality. Here, the architectural vocabulary extends from the region’s vernacular—courtyards, shaded thresholds, tactile materials—and is reinterpreted through a contemporary lens.
The interiors were approached with an atelier sensibility, where material honesty and craft informed each decision. Stone surfaces, textured plasters, and timber details create a tactile continuity with the landscape, while the warm, muted palette reinforces a sense of grounded comfort.
In this way, the lobby and restaurant are designed not only as functional nodes, but as spatial anchors for the hotel experience—places where the natural character of Urla is translated into a contemporary architectural language of hospitality.
Located on Beyoğlu’s Meşrutiyet Avenue, the 19th-century building that houses Rutin carries the weight of its Neo-Renaissance heritage. Its stone façade, arched windows, and symmetrical composition reflect the cosmopolitan spirit and monumental character of its era.
Our intervention does not attempt to compete with this historic fabric but instead engages it in a deliberate dialogue. Against the ornamented stonework, we introduced minimal, earth-toned surfaces that signal the contemporary spirit of the gastronomic experience within. Stripped of decorative excess, these new layers establish a strong contrast while allowing the historic façade to remain present and legible.
Strategically placed narrow openings in the surface reveal glimpses of the interior. They work simultaneously as thresholds and stage-like cuts: offering fragments of what awaits inside while preserving a sense of mystery.
Material choices follow the ethos of Rutin itself — natural textures, unembellished finishes, and material honesty — echoing the historic stone while creating a setting that feels familiar yet distinctly new.
Ultimately, the design negotiates between the gravity of the past and the clarity of the present. Rutin transforms the building’s street front into a contemporary threshold, where history and minimalism coexist to frame a focused, immersive gastronomic journey.
